What do you advise to aid your patients in recovery?
Recovery really starts before the operation. Performing suitable exercise prior to surgery helps to lead to a more rapid recovery post-surgery. It is really important to listen carefully to the physiotherapists following the surgery as they have lots of hints and tips to help you to maximise your mobility as early as possible. As long as you are following the guidance from the physios, building up your strength and control, then the recovery can come very quickly following surgery. Historically, joint replacement surgery has been for patients who were looking only to reduce their overall level of pain. Nowadays, our goal is not only to reduce level of pain but also to improve function. By performing joint replacement surgery, sometimes at a younger age, we get them back to the activities that they enjoy such as golf, tennis, walking, cycling and skiing.
